Every New Year, we break out a list of things that we want to accomplish. Topping my list this year is working on getting my skin to look its best. For the most part when we make our resolution lists we put up some good things, but the problem is we rarely keep up with them for more than a couple of weeks (and that’s speaking of the ones who really try to give it a go). It seems that we can’t seem to keep ourselves on track to following through on making changes. In part, this may have to do with the fact that while may be willing to work for the things that we want things and we usually tend to want them quickly. When it comes to our taking care of our skin, this is no exception.
What we forget is that there is no overnight perfect solution for repairing skin that will give you the results you crave. However, there are things that really do work and over a period of time can give you amazing results if you can just manage to actually follow through on what you need to do. How many times have you gone out and bought the latest miracle cream or face wash only to stop using it after awhile? Or how about going in to get a treatment, such as a facial and then you never go back to keep up with the necessary upkeep? Clear skin is one of those things that I think everyone would love to have, myself included. So this coming year, I’m going to do everything I can to help my skin be at its best.
Although this article is named New Year’s Resolution, I would argue that what I am proposing for myself goes beyond just a “resolution”. I consider it to be something that I will incorporate and make into a lifelong change, that as such, will adapt to obtain the best results possible as I continue to age and have my skin change. I think we resolve to something and then once we obtain certain results we feel like we are done, but when it comes to your skin and keeping it looking beautiful it is something that we make part of our lives.
Does this mean that you have to go out and get procedures done every week and spend thousands of dollars a month on products? No. What it does mean, however, is that it is something you have to be committed to doing and as such should follow up on the things that will help you get there.
So here are a couple of tips for staying in line, if like me, you’re trying to work on having beautiful skin in 2014.
Finding What’s Right For You
Sometimes we’re not exactly sure what would be best for our faces. That’s okay, the practitioners at My Vida Spa are here to help you figure out what will work best for you. Not everyone’s skin is going to be the same, so what might work for you might not work for someone else and vice versa. So while something may have amazing results for your friends, sister, even mother’s skin, that does not guarantee that you will have the same results. Knowing what works for your skin will be a process, but one that in my opinion is well worth it.
Following Through on Treatments
This is one of those things that I have been guilty off in the past myself when it comes to other things, such as my hair or nails. Many times there are three reasons that one will not keep up with treatments:
– It’s too expensive
– Not seeing results fast enough
– You see results and think that’s it.
It’s too expensive:
This is a big reason for people not following up on treatments and it’s understandable. We want great results, but we don’t want to break the bank to do it. I will say this, however, you get what you pay for, meaning if you go out and pay $50 for a facial that’s what you’re going to get: a $50 facial. At My Vida Spa you may pay a little more, (Nothing outrageously exorbitant like you’ll find at some South Beach spas) but you will be getting what you paid for which means quality. The products used are of the highest quality and are chosen to optimize your results.
Not seeing results soon enough:
This harks back to what I was discussing earlier. People expect everything to happen at that exact moment, not even overnight in some cases. Let’s be realistic people…if you have problem skin, don’t expect to have immaculate skin after one facial, that’s just setting yourself up for disappointment. You have to understand that in the same way that your skin got progressively worse over time, it will take time for it to get better. Give things time and don’t discard the small improvements you will start to see because small improvements = progress.
You see results and think thats it:
On the opposite spectrum, some people will do everything they need to and once they get the results they are seeking they completely stop everything thinking they are done. Time for another reality check: If you have problem skin, it doesn’t mean you have to have problem skin forever, but in order to not have it you have to maintain it. Just because you get to were you want does not mean that if you don’t maintain a healthy skin regiment you can keep it. Chances are you stop taking care of your skin and it will revert back after some time. Think of it as being a kin to losing weight . If you reach your goal, but then proceed to stop eating healthy and exercising how you did to get to your goal, you’ll start to gain the weight back.
This doesn’t mean you’ll have to go in every week for a facial or treatment once your skin is where you want it, but you may need to go in every other week or once a month. Either way you should definitely stick to it because it will only benefit you and your skin in the end.
Proper and Continued Product Use
Using the products that will work for you how and when you are supposed to use them is essential if you really want to see results. Many times you’ll find yourself starting a skin care routine and then somewhere along the line you start to get lazy. You might forget to put on that lotion as you run out of the house in the morning or you might forget to put on a cream at night because you went out that night and got home late. This will definitely affect your results. I know how difficult it can be to keep a routine, trust me I am notorious for forgetting, but if you want the results you will have to commit to it.
Proper use also includes not abusing the products. What do I mean by abusing? Well, if you are supposed to be using a specific amount of cream and a certain amount of times a day, do not go overboard in an attempt to create faster results. All this may end up doing is actually irritating and damaging your skin more. Trust in the process and follow through with how you are supposed to use the products. It may take time, but the results will be worth it. Slathering on the product is not going to produce anything but a loss of product and money. Remember what gets penetrated into your skin is what is actually laying on the skin, so if you have a thick layer of product on your skin, you’re basically throwing product away. At the end of the day just know that a little bit goes very far.
Bare Your Skin….
This goes more for the ladies than it does for the guys because guys do it anyway. Ladies if you have problem skin make an effort to go makeup free whenever you can. I know…the horror! I know, through experience of my own, that this can be extremely difficult especially when our skin is at its worst because our first instinct is to cover it up with make-up. We all know, however, that as wonderful a job as that make-up may do to cover all your problem areas up, its just as horrible for your skin if you are trying to clear it up. So as much as it may sound dreadful, make-up off! You don’t need to be in full make-up in your house or to make a quick pit stop at the grocery store. Believe, you might feel naked without your make-up when you do it, but how wonderful will it feel when your skin is so beautiful that you don’t even need make-up to make it glow.
Make your change…
So as we ring in the New Year, remember that how well your skin will look this year will be dependent on the time and dedication you put into taking care of it. Don’t think of it as something temporary, but as a change in lifestyle. Let this be the year when you put your skin and its well being at the forefront of your thoughts and actions. It is your skin and its the only one you got. I know it sounds like a lot but nothing worth truly having has ever come without work and while some may be blessed with the genetics for beautiful flawless skin, the rest of us have to work on it. Yet, as much work as it may be, once more I will say that in the end it is totally worth it!
